In early November 2005, my ex-husband Leon and I spent one week in Matsuyama, Ehime, hometown of our old friend Teruki Tamayanagi. Among the sightseeing destinations was an old castle at the top of a mountain in the middle of the city. An archaic rope-way takes single passengers up and down. Sounds like a simple ride, and it is. Watch as various Japanese rope-way-riders glide past me and my camera, each absorbed in his/her own particular awareness. Some are taking in the views, others are taking a snooze. All riders, myself included, are placidly suspended 4 stories high over the mountain-side...with NO safety belts. An anthropological sketch. Original music composed and performed by Leon Lo, Antoine Lafontaine and myself: the Paper Boots.
